The Sunday article Somebody is going to get killed, about the Ohio Department of Youth Services, repeats a slur about teachers working in juvenile prisons. Consider the difficulties in engaging students who have not attended school, often for a year or more. Consider the difficulty in teaching when students leave a class each week and new students are added, and when many do not stay for a full academic year. Consider the difficulty of planni {keyword} ng and teaching when some students will be absent from class to get haircuts, talk with social workers or other officers or spend time in lock-up. Some students are hostile toward any effort at instruction. My experience as a teacher of delinquent boys for 25 years, which ended 21 years ago, suggests that the investiga {keyword} tive reporters often fail to understand the limitations that teachers and other staff members face. Juvenile-prison teachers want to work in circumstances where accountability {keyword} is possible, but the ever-shifting efforts of the system have ways of destroying the best plans that teachers make. I know from experience that it takes time to find productive ways of teaching. The Dispatch article served to demoralize institution teachers trying to cope with the system and engage students. Image Credit: Craig Sjodin/ABCJust as surrounding torture scenes featured in has started to dissipate, ABC s Scandal could reignite the flames of discussion with a graphic torture scene that will be featured in its next new episode, airing Jan. 10. In the last new episode of Scandal, Huck (Guillermo Diaz) was arrested under the Patriot Act and accused of attempting to assassinate President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) a crime for which he is not guilty. After the episode, Diaz hinted to EW in a that an unpleasant encounter with officials was on the horizon for his character in light of his arrest. His past has prepared him for whatâs coming but I canât say what is, he said. Itâs not going to be good. And it isn t. The exclusive clip below shows that Huck has been taken and subjected to torture as a means of interrogation, including beatings and waterboarding.Tell us what you think after watching below. <Note> Viewer discretion is advised...] Catch two special encore episodes of Scandal tonight on ABC and tune in Jan. 10 at 10 p.m. ET for an all-new episode.Related:

Did the Mayan Apocalypse happen after all? With fame-wannabes and Spencer Pratt making headlines again, it certa inly seems like doomsday is upon us. The couple, known as Speidi by their un-adoring public, have just been announced as contestants on the 11th season of Britain's "Celebrity Big Brother." Like their moniker and publicity-seeking relationship, Speidi will be competing as a "single entity" against the 10 other housemates. Hopefully the house can accommodate Heidi's two other guests: her DDD breast implants, acquired when she famously went under the knife for 10 plastic surgeries in a single day. As the former "Hills" stars joined host Brian Dowling -- who actually referred to them as "reality TV royalty" -- they were roundly booed by the live audience, who continued to voice their displeasure throughout their introductions. It's hard to imagine why, considering their charming video package. "I love myself -- very much so," noted Spencer, proving that although his star may have fallen, his ego is still as inflated as ever. "It's going to b {keyword}e horrifying," h {keyword} e admitted about the prospect of being confined to a "house" with strangers. "I really don't like people."That doesn't mean their competitors won't be dazzled by Speidi. After all, Heidi says of her Miss Universe performance (she was one of the original reality stars to attempt a music career): "That was one of the biggest performances in the history of television."Hmmm ... sorta like their brief appearance (they walked out -- twice) on "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here"? Although nothing compared to the Costa Rican jungle, Heidi and Spencer must tolerate deprivation in their new reality show: They were promptly banished to the "basement," joining four other "have-not" housemates without their own clothes, furniture or a shower. No shower can wash away the shame we feel at adding another headline to pop up in Speidi's Google alerts, but we're going to scald ourselves anyway. Happy new year.

As the Los Angeles Times reported, there were two attempts Tuesday to do just that, but they failed because of winds that were gusting up to 80 mph and seas of more than 40 feet. The Friday on a remote island in southern Alaska. The Kulluk had more than 150,000 gallons of fuel and other petroleum products on board. Right now the Kulluk <rig> is sound. There is no sign of a breach of the hull; there is no sign of release of any product, Capt. Paul Mehler, the federal on-scene commander for what was becoming a major moncler jackets beige response effort, said at a news conference Tuesday. The 266-foot conical rig, which recently completed an inaugural season drilling the beginnings of an exploratory well for Shell in the Beaufort Sea, was rocking slowly in the turbulent surf off Sitkalidak Island, near a remote area known as Ocean Bay, just off southern Kodiak Island.According to officials with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, environmental response teams were moving in from as far away as Homer and Seward to monitor possible threats to the water and wildlife. The area lies near critical habitat for Steller sea lions, protected under the federal Endangered Species Act, and is also near habitat for seabirds known as Steller s eiders and a number of salmon species, state officials said. The incident occurred as the Kulluk was being towed south from Dutch Harbor, Alaska, last week. Its main tow line and emergency line detached from the vessel hauling it as a result of heavy winds and high seas. Then the engines failed on the towing vessel. The weather stymied further attempts to reestablish a tow.Conservation groups said the incident raised questions about how well Shell Alaska could have responded if the incident had happened not near Kodiak, where the Coast Guard operates a major base, but 1,000 miles north where drilling operations were underway in the Arctic. We are learning, again and again, that Alaska s seas are unforgiving. More careful preparation and planning clearly are needed before decisions are made to allow offshore oil and gas activities in the Arctic Ocean, the conservation group Oceana, which has opposed offshore drilling in Alaska, said in a statement. Substantial public resources have been and will be expended as a result of Shell s choices. The American public deserves to know how those choices were made and whether accidents like this can be prevented. ALSO:
