Brazilian City Declares Emergency Over Dengue Fever
Municipal authorities in Campo Grande, the capital of the southwestern Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, on Monday declared a health emergency due to a serious outbreak of dengue fever.
The decree, signed by Mayor Alcides Bernal, says that the city needs to take "urgent" measures to control the epidemic.
Of the 9,320 cases verified during the first weeks of January, 600 have come in the last three days, according to figures compiled by the municipal health department
In the state of Parana, which borders on Mato Grosso do Sul, five municipalities have declared an emergency with 1,269 confirmed dengue cases.
Bernal, in remarks to the state-r <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> un Agencia Brasil news service, said that "the numbers show that this epidemic is the largest" ever experienced in Campo Grande, a city of about 786,000 people.
The emergency decree allows the hiring of doctors without the <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> need for bidding and it also faci <a href={url}>{keyword}</a>litates the procedures for buying medical equipment, among other things.
Simultaneously, authorities have increased the hours of operation for mobile clinics.

Central Michigan today gave football coach Dan Enos a new four-year contract. The deal supersedes his previous contract while extending Enos an additional season, through 2016.“This agreement recognizes the success Dan and his staff had on the field and in the classroom this year,” athletic director Dave Heeke said in a released statement. “I have high expectations for our program and appreciate the resolve Dan has shown in building this program. His vision, dedication for excellence, and commitment to doing things the right way have helped this team to be positioned for continued success.”Enos’ new contract includes an increase in base salary and enhancements to a list of potential performance bonuses.“I am very excited about the next chapter of CMU football,” Enos said in the statement. “Leading this team and maintaining the great traditions and legacy of Chippewa football is a great responsibility and privilege. I'm honored to have the opportunity to work with such an excellent group of young men and to strive together for continued success in the classroom and on the football field."In 2012, his third season at Central Michigan, Enos led the Chippewas to seven victories and a win over Western Kentucky in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit.The former Michigan State quarterback was an assistant coach with the Spartans before taking over at CMU in 2010.
